Not long before the first Covid lockdown, HB Drawing started a new project walking the Capital Ring, a walking route put together by Transport for London and organised in sections starting and ending at stations. With one thing and another, we didn’t finish the Ring until August 2024 but it has been a fruitful source of ideas for me.
Like our previous walking project, we found ourselves walking through everyday London, the residential areas where many people live but few tourists set out to visit.
These drawings explore the unspectacular places, objects and views that you can find almost anywhere and that link one place to another. Each drawing merges two images. The foreground in one image floats to the background in the next image. The titles come from the What Three Words app, which allows every 3 metre square of the earth’s surface to be identified by a unique triplet of words.
This first image is developing alongside the individual drawings as a record of all the places, using just the main outlines of the images.
