Exhibition news and CV

Exhibitions in 2024

Once again I have got a slot in the SFSA Drawing Open at No Format Gallery, Deptford, London SE14. The show runs from Friday 10 May to Sunday 19 May, with a PV on the Friday from 6 to 9 which is usually a great event with lots of the artists present. Sadly this year that won’t include me! Otherwise the gallery is generally open on Tuesdays to Sundays noon to 5.

Landscapes and Seascapes at The Open Gallery, Halifax in March included my drawing ‘seascapes‘.

The annual Diana Armfield Prize for Drawing from Observation In March included one of my studies undertaken at the V&A, this one of the back of Canova’s Three Graces.

An exhibition on the theme of Home at Fronteer Gallery in Sheffield in February/March included my drawing Hearth.

Su is exploring her life-long interest in drawing, making books and textiles. Her work explores the connections between current and past selves, and the role of memory and construction in the narrative of our lives.  In looking at the multiple ways we present ourselves, she is influenced by the perspective of being a twin: always together yet always separate.

She completed the MA Drawing course at UAL Wimbledon in September 2017, and previously studied under artists including: Jeanette Appleton, Clare Bryan, Sarah Bryant, Tony Hull and Lin Kerr.

She is a member of HB Drawing.

Previous Exhibitions

Available online

HB Drawing’s latest online show The Mind’s Eye is available to view from 23 November 2022. It features work by 12 artists, including me, who responded to the invitation to draw a mystery object circulated by mail. The drawings explore how we use more than just our eyes as part of the drawing process.

Found in Translation an HB Drawing group online show launched on 1 July 2020, showcasing selected work springing from our long-term project to ‘draw from drawings’, following the historical tradition of apprentices to the masters.

The Sea is Here several of my long-exposure photographs are featured in an art book on the theme of ‘absence as presence’ published in October 2020. For more information on the project, the artists involved and the book click here.

2023

The HB Drawing group show What If I …? at the Kaleidoscope Gallery in Sevenoaks, Kent In September/October looked at how being in a collective helps to support and develop our individual practices. It included a selection of pieces that illustrate how my work has been influenced and inspired by our walking projects, our drawing days at museums and galleries and the residency I did in Wales last year with other HB artists.

The first Royal Birmingham Society of Artists Drawing Prize 2023 exhibition in September/October included my drawing Capital Ring 10 stuck.alone.alert/legend.fells.melt.

The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists Summer Show at their gallery in St Paul’s Square, Birmingham B3 1SA, in July included my drawing Seascapes.

One of my Capital Ring drawings was in a group show called Urban Jungle at the Fronteer Gallery in Sheffield held in May and June 2023; and another was in a group show in Sheffield called Delphic, at the Cupola Gallery, Hillsborough in June and July.

I also contributed a drawing to a show organised in Paris by Chlöe Briggs to celebrate 10 years of her initiative, Drawing Is Free, designed to bring people together around the pleasure and practice of drawing. The show was held at the Paris College of Art, 15 rue Fénelon, 75010, Paris in May and June 2023.

I contributed a small piece of felt to the show #mybodyinmyhands at SVA John Street Gallery, Stroud in May 2023. Both online and real life shows are part of a research project into ‘how creativity can be used to express how it feels to be in your body: the sensory, the relationship of internal and external, the physical manifestation of mental states of being and how creativity helps to manage and describe these states.’

The SFSA Drawing Open at No Format Gallery, Deptford, London SE14 in May 2023 included a very-hard-to-photograph drawing of Richmond Bridge in the rain.

Useful Drawings at Eye to Pencil Studio, 26 Exmouth Market, London in March/April 2023 included a ‘walking and drawing’ piece and my thoughts on how such drawings are useful to me.
